The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai started the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
Playoff Decider
This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
