Gas Detonation Claims Three Police Officers While Executing Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled after the explosion was found not long after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure left as a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the past.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander stated to reporters.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The official was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the doorway and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
