Champions League Action This Evening: Marseille v Newcastle & More
Welcome to a fresh evening of exciting European Cup soccer. Nine games are set for tonight, including 3 English clubs in play. The Blues take on Barça in the standout match of the evening, whilst The Magpies travel to Marseille and Manchester City welcome Leverkusen.
League Table
We're at the midway point of the league phase, so the table is beginning to form. Each of the six English clubs are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only two points separating 5th and sixteenth position, so there's a whiff of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. All remains open.

Historical Context
The sole past encounter involving Newcastle and Marseille was the Europa League semifinal of 2004, won by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have not faced each other previously. Barcelona and Chelsea have a peedie bit of history.
Early Match Updates
Just one goal in the first half of the early fixtures. Dahl's sixth-minute sizzler has earned Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil advantage away to Ajax.
Marseille v Newcastle Preview
Although Newcastle arrived in the south of France coming off their confidence-boosting 2-1 home Premier League victory against Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their only away win since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.
It's not that Howe was eager to discuss the mental side of this away form issue. “The European Cup is different to Premier League games,” said the coach, whose side are sixth in the European table, with nine pts from a possible twelve and direct progression to the last 16 almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”
A dedicated live feed is available for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
